Florida man blames hallucinogens and "bad trip" for New Years Day killing

A man who was sentenced to 19 years in prison says hallucinogens and a “bad trip” caused him to shoot and kill a person on New Year’s Day.

24-year-old Trace Thomas McDowell was found guilty of manslaughter with a weapon after an argument led to a shooting that killed one person on January 1st in Cape Coral.

Court documents show McDowell was found behind the apartment complex where the shooting took place in an ‘agitated state.’

McDowell admitted to using hallucinogens during a New Year’s Eve celebration and said he was having a “bad trip” when he shot his friend.

On Monday, McDowell was sentenced to 19 years in prison.
