Palm Beach County leaders are looking into drafting a condo safety ordinance after the state lawmakers failed to pass any legislation addressing it.

County Mayor Robert Weinroth says staff is reviewing the Senate and House bills that were not passed, to pick out the best parts that can be used on a local level.

They're also looking at an ordinance in Boca Raton, the first Palm Beach County municipality to require inspections of older condos.

All this in the wake of the Surfside condo collapse last year and as residents of a Miami-Dade County apartment complex are being evacuated because their building has been deemed "structurally unsound."

There are hopes that Gov. DeSantis may call for a special session to deal with the issue or that it can be tackled while the Legislature is back in Tallahassee for a session on redistricting later this month.
