The Boynton Beach Police Department announced that they collected 127 firearms during last weekend's gun buyback event.

$18,000 in gift cards to Target and Walmart were distributed at a church during a 3 hour time frame on Saturday.

People turning in rifles and long guns were given double the amount of those turning in hand guns.

"We're all heartbroken, saddened and horrified about the number of mass shootings at the hands of assault rifles and semi-automatic rifles. So there's a greater incentive to try to take those type of firearms off the street, when people no longer have a need for them."

Police Chief Michael Gregory says that while this was the first such event in the city's history, it wouldn't likely be the last.
