A new Costco warehouse store is a step closer to opening on the Treasure Coast after an initial vote by the Stuart City Commission.
Currently, there is a Costco in Palm Beach Gardens to the south and in Melbourne to the north, but that could change.
Commissioners gave unanimous approval during a meeting on Tuesday on the condition that developers address more than a dozen conditions the city requested.
The proposal was to build a 162,000 square foot store, featuring 18 gas pumps. There would also be an apartment complex with nearly 400 units, as well as retail and restaurant space.
Among the things that city commissioners have asked developers to do is to rename a connector road from the proposed "Costco Boulevard" to "something more appropriate for Stuart." They also want the number of apartment units reduced by 5 percent, with the area used for green space.
The location of the project is near South Kanner Highway and Pomeroy Street.
The Commission will take a second vote once their conditions are met.
There has been significant push back on this proposal from residents, who have traffic concerns.
