The Palm Beach County School Board has approved a motion to hold parents or guardians responsible if their child loses or damages an electronic device that was loaned out by the school district.
The vote was unanimous during Wednesday's school board meeting.
It was brought up because the district loaned out 160,000 devices to students since March of last year, when they transitioned from in-person to remote-learning. And the district says it has spent more than $800,000 on repairs for those devices.
Board members want to make sure the Chromebooks are returned in good shape.
Under the new rule, if parents or guardians are unable to pay back the money owed, schools will work with families on a case-by-case basis and the students may be able to do community service to cover the costs.
