Flu activity is decreasing across Florida

The coronavirus outbreak may be growing around the globe but what isn't spreading in Florida is the flu- though influenza activity is still above peak levels observed in the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

The state Department of Health is out with its latest Florida Flu Review.

Decreases were observed in all regions of the state. The report says elevated activity is still expected for several more weeks.

18 outbreaks were reported during Week 8 of the 2019-2020 Season, down from 24 the previous week.

No new influenza-associated pediatric deaths were reported. Nine influenza-associated pediatric deaths have been reported so far this season in Florida. Only one of the children had been vaccinated.

The CDC continues to recommend that people who have not yet been vaccinated do so as soon as possible. It's especially important for people at higher risk for complications: children, those over 65, pregnant women and people with underlying medical conditions.
