Record Low 3.0 % Unemployment Rate In Florida Last Month

U.S. Unemployment Rate Drops To 5.1 Percent, Lowest Level Since 2008

Florida has hit a record low for unemployment.

Ken Lawson, Executive Director of the state Department of Economic Opportunity says December's jobless rate was at 3.0 percent.

"We have never had this number before. It just shows confidence in Gov. DeSantis' policies, low taxation...smart regulation."

The lowest unemployment rate in the state was in Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties, where just 1.8 percent of the workforce was without a job last month.

Lawson explains how they did that, focusing on Miami-Dade, where the labor force is larger than 1.4 million people.

"Tracking new business. 23,000 new private sector jobs were created over this past year. They're making sure they're a business-friendly community, connecting (and) working together."

Education and Health Services gained the most jobs year-over-year (+4.1%).

Palm Beach County's unemployment rate was down to 2.7 percent from 3.2% in December 2018. Broward County is at 2.5 percent, down from 3.1 a year ago. Those are the same numbers as Hillsborough County.

In the Orlando-Kissimmee area, Orange County's rate hit 2.4% in December, down from 2.9 percent in December 2018, while Osceola County was at 2.7 percent last month. That's down from 3.3% a year earlier.

Unemployment in the state capital sits at 2.5%. That's down from 3.1 percent in December of 2018.
