Toxic Red Tide On Florida's Southwest Coast

(Sarasota, FL) -- High concentrations of red tide are being detected in the waters of Sarasota. Florida fish and wildlife officials released the latest red tide update on Wednesday afternoon, which shows the red tide organism, known as Karenia brevis, was detected in several areas in Southwest Florida.

Sarasota County waterways contained high concentration levels, while low concentration levels were detected in Pinellas County.

Officials say they received reports of respiratory irritation this week in Sarasota, as well as fish kill reports. The next update on red tide levels will be released tomorrow.
