Lion Country Safari Confirms Lightning Killed 2 Giraffes

Lion Country Safari in Loxahatchee confirms it lost two giraffes to lightning.

The park on Tuesday said the incident happened during a storm in early May when a lightning strike simultaneously claimed the lives of a ten year old female named Lily and a one year old male named Jioni. Results of medical exams just back confirmed the cause of death.

The animals are being remembered as very charismatic and having a close relationship with staff members.

Lion Country Safari opens areas of the park where animals may seek shelter, but a spokesperson says they generally like to be out in the open.

The park's director says the staff are reaching to experts to look for ways to improve.

Lion Country Safari has lightning detection systems all around its safari.

There are now 18 giraffes at the park after last month's tragedy.
