Omicron COVID Variant Appears in Florida

Florida health officials report a patient in St. Lucie County has tested positive for the Omicron COVID-19 variant, and contact tracing is underway.

This as a Tampa hospital is confirming its first case of the Omicron variant.

A spokesperson for the James A. Haley Veterans' Hospital says the patient is experiencing mild symptoms and recently returned from international travel. Statement went on to say that providers were quickly able to detect, test, confirm, and add the data to our developing understanding of this strain. The Florida Department of Health in Hillsborough County says it has not yet received any notice from the state on a patient with the Omicron variant, which was first identified in South Africa. White House Chief medical Advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci has suggested that early indications are that Omicron may be less dangerous than the delta variant.
