Governor DeSantis Signs Bill for Red Tide Research

SARASOTA -- Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill meant to encourage red tide research.

The bill (SB 1552) creates a Red Tide Mitigation initiative, between Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Mote President and CEO Dr. Michael Crosby calls the bill "a game changer" that will transform a threat to Florida's economy into an economic opportunity.

DeSantis says the bill provides $18 million for research, as well as money to examine the human health effects of red tide.

This follows the worst red tide bloom in recorded Florida history, which lasted over a year. It reached areas from Northwest to Southeast Florida, but was most intense along coastal areas between Tampa Bay and the Everglades.
